About Biotech Energy Limited

The problem we're solving:

Biotech Energy addresses the problem of toxic waste cooking oil in Bangladesh, which is used unethically in food preparation and contributes to soil and water pollution. Additionally, improper disposal of industrial food waste leads to methane emissions, exacerbating greenhouse gas emissions. There is also a lack of sustainable solutions to manage waste oils and fats, which are currently major contributors to environmental degradation.

Our solution:

Biotech Energy offers a sustainable solution by converting used cooking oil, animal fat, and industrial food waste into biodiesel. This process not only reduces greenhouse gas emissions by up to 78% compared to petroleum diesel but also repurposes waste materials that would otherwise contribute to pollution. The company’s biodiesel can be used as a drop-in replacement for petroleum diesel, with no blending limitations, making it a versatile and eco-friendly alternative.

Our differentiator:

Biotech Energy stands out by providing a full-cycle solution for waste management and biodiesel production, leveraging a strong supply chain that collects raw materials from various sources, including restaurants and food industries. Their approach is certified by international sustainability standards (ISCC), and the biodiesel produced has excellent cold weather performance, making it suitable for year-round use. The company also has first-mover advantage in the Bangladeshi market.

Our biggest achievement:

Biotech Energy collected 650 tons of used cooking oil from various restaurants and food industries across Bangladesh. It also collected and processed 245 tons of oil containing food residues, demonstrating system robustness. It transformed the business lens of many small and mid-scaled informal food stalls with additional income generation. It supported 500+ informal food shoppers and ensured better social and economic benefit by incentivization & standardization of the collection process.
